2018 Give Miami Day

Dear Parents, Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School.

Thank you for your overwhelming support of our students and our school during the 2018 Give Miami Day. In a short 24-hour period, your enthusiastic generosity brought us a total of $17,875.00 from 227 gifts. Through your generosity, we will continue to cover the cost of police and security personnel presence at our school and pay for the new A/C units for the Gym/Cafetorium.

Your family will be in our daily prayers. Thank you for supporting Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School where we continue to educate this generation of children for our country and for our Church.

Thank you and Blessings,

Ricardo Briz, Principal
Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School

Red Ribbon Week: "Life is your Journey! Travel Drug Free!

In conjunction with our Red Ribbon Week theme: “Life is your Journey! Travel Drug Free”, students in first through eighth grade participated in a paper airplane challenge in their STREAM classes. The students learned about the forces of flight and completed the challenge. The complexity of the lesson changed depending on the grade level. First grade constructed and decorated a paper airplane. Then they got to throw it and measure the distance it flew. Second and third grades designed a blueprint of their airplane and then constructed their planes. They then got four trial throws where they measured the distances and recorded the distances down in feet and inches. They then answered questions in reflection of how the challenge went.

Fourth through eighth grades collaborated with a team to make three different types of air planes, hypothesized which would work the best and then they measured the distance thrown of all three. They concluded if their hypothesis was correct or not and made improvements and adjustments to their planes, if needed. If adjustments were done they then threw and recorded them again. They then completed a data form, plotted the distances on a graph and worked out the mean, median and mode of the flights. Everyone enjoyed learning about how flight works in this hands-on way.

Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School is a Christ-centered educational community that is committed to the fullness of the Gospel message. We strive to develop each child’s spiritual, academic, social, and physical potential.
